The world's loudest records might surprise you

Every day, we hear a variety of sounds. Sounds that are too loud can damage your hearing. Sounds louder than 130 dB can cause acute hearing loss. There are many animals, birds and others like volcanoes, indoor sports that can make much louder sound than that. Here some of the loudest records in the world...


1. World's loudest sound

On August 27th 1883, the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia made the loudest sound known to recorded history. The volcano eruption registered 172 decibels at 100 miles from the source. The sound was so loud that it travelled the earth a whooping four times and was clearly heard 3,000 miles away. By comparison, the bomb that dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a force of 20 kilotons, or nearly 10,000 times less power.

2. World's loudest animal


The Sperm whales are the loudest animals on the earth. They use echolocation and vocalization as loud as 230 decibels. They are louder than a jet engine (150 decibels). It's estimated that sperm whales can hear one another even thousands of miles away.

3. Loudest animal on land

The howler monkey has the loudest sound of all land animals in the world. They can produce sounds that reach 140 decibels. According to Guinness Book of World Records, their vocalizations can be heard clearly for 3 miles (4.8 km).

 

4. Loudest bird

According to a paper published in the journal Current Biology, The mating call of the male white bellbird (Procnias albus) is the loudest bird call recorded in the world, reaching 125 dB. Researchers measured the white bellbird’s songs and found that they reached volumes up to 125 decibels. It is 9 decibels higher than previous loudest recorded bird, the screaming piha, which peaks at 116 decibels. The bellbirds found in forests in the Guianas, with small numbers in Venezuela and the Brazilian state of ParĂ¡.

5. Loudest human

According to the Guinness World Records, the loudest human scream was 129 decibels performed by Classroom assistant Jill Drake, a woman. It measured at the Halloween festivities held in the Millennium Dome, London, UK in October 2000. A Irish teacher, Annalisa Flanagan, holds the loudest shouting record with 121 decibels. She shouted the word "quiet" at 121 decibels, the equivalent of a jet engine.

6. Loudest crowd roar
