According to new study, the  average ruby-throated hummingbird can fly as far as 2,200 kilometres (1,367 miles) without  getting a break during its annual migration from the U.S. East Coast to Central America. Before starts migration, they need to eat a lot of insects and nectar. (1)

Hummingbirds have one of the highest metabolic rates of any animal. The heart rates  of this bird can reach as high as 1260 beats per minute during the flight and down to 250 when at rest. During flight, oxygen consumption per gram of muscle tissue in a hummingbird is about 10 times higher than that measured in elite human athletes. (4)
